Tinn

Tinn is a desktop app for the least glamorous part of a building project: writing the specification. Every material, product, surface and dimension in a space has to be written down somewhere, and that somewhere was always a mess for me. A spreadsheet, an InDesign file, an email thread. So I built a proper tool for it. A project in Tinn is one file you keep on your own machine. It works offline and prints cleanly, because this work still happens with paper on the desk, and often on a site with no signal.

It started from frustration. The software sold for this, even the parts aimed at architects and engineers, was really made for someone else: project managers, retailers, online shops. None of it fit the way a building actually gets drawn up. So I made the one I wanted instead, while still doing the work it was meant to fix.

I did all of it myself: the idea, the design, the brand and the code. It runs on Windows now, with macOS to follow. The look is deliberately quiet. Plain type, thin black lines, sharp corners. It owes a lot to the catalogues and books on my studio shelf: Sirotov, Ecohaus, Branco Arquitetura.

Tinn is still being tested. I add to it most weeks, a bit more depth and a few rough edges sanded down. It has been the most satisfying thing I have built. If you plan spaces for a living and want to try it, it is at tinn.app.
