As the world population continues to increase, and the built environment maintains its steady growth, our dependency on heavy materials has never been higher. Concrete, stone, and asphalt, materials often used in cities, lack the ability to absorb and release water. In addition to this, these materials absorb a lot of heat and release it slowly over many hours, and they offer little to no shade. The effects of this are, among many others, an increase in temperature in and above urban areas. Whereas forests and natural landscapes can absorb and slowly evaporate water and, in the process, reduce the temperature, urban landscapes are progressively lacking this ability. The lack of shaded areas, the lack of water to absorb heat, and the abundance of heavy materials contribute to this effect. The effect we are talking about is called the Urban Heat Island Effect and is the starting point of this experimental project.
In this project, we were asked to design a building that contributes to reducing the urban heat island effect as much as possible. To accomplish this, several aspects were researched to find optimal solutions to fit the location and the environment. Form, technology, and nature are examples of factors that were looked into as tools to accomplish the task. The final result should be a building reducing the UHIE, produce synergy with the program, and use contemporary craftsmanship.

Stilt House er et designforslag for en bolig i et ekstremt flomfremkallende miljø, utviklet som del av Extreme-studioet ved TU Delft. Oppgaven ba studentene om å designe for forhold ved kanten av bebobarhet — i dette tilfellet et sted som periodisk oversvømmes av stigende vannstander.
Forslaget hever bolignprogrammet høyt over flomslettet på et strukturelt pelarsystem og frigjør bakkenivået slik at vann kan passere uhindret. Boligen er organisert vertikalt snarere enn horisontalt: en tett servicekjerne i sentrum, med boligrom arrangert rundt den på ulike høyder, hver orientert mot en spesifikk utsikt eller lyskvalitet.
Prosjektet undersøker hvordan begrensninger pålagt av et ekstremt miljø — strukturelle, programmatiske, materielle — kan bli generative krefter snarere enn bare problemer å løse. Resultatet er en bolig som paradoksalt nok er mest hjemme når den er omgitt av vann.
Stilt House é uma proposta de design para uma habitação em um ambiente de enchente extremo, desenvolvida como parte do estúdio Extreme da TU Delft. O briefing pedia que os alunos projetassem para condições no limite da habitabilidade — neste caso, um local periodicamente submerso por níveis crescentes de água.
A proposta eleva o programa habitacional bem acima da planície de inundação em um sistema estrutural de pilotis, liberando o nível do solo para que a água passe sem impedimentos. A habitação é organizada verticalmente em vez de horizontalmente: um núcleo compacto de serviços no centro, com espaços de estar dispostos ao redor em diferentes alturas, cada um orientado para uma vista ou qualidade de luz específica.
O projeto investiga como as restrições impostas por um ambiente extremo — estruturais, programáticas, materiais — podem se tornar forças geradoras em vez de meros problemas a serem resolvidos. O resultado é uma habitação que, paradoxalmente, está mais em casa quando rodeada de água.
