In collaboration with Alex Kirschtein, we were commissioned by the dean of the Faculty of Architecture at TU Delft to create an architectural model of a housing compound in Meqdela Gebbi.
This model was inspired by research into some of the complex forms of Addis Ababa, particularly focusing on the typologies of informal settlements. These housing compounds, locally referred to as gebbi, are characterized by their organic composition of spaces and forms. They typically feature a public central space bounded by residential housing and fencing, which facilitates circulatory, social interaction, and different income based functions. Each compound includes at least one distinct social space that is central to the local community life, fostering tight-knit social relationships and economic activities.
This model showcased the intricate social and spatial dynamics of this region and was used to emphasize the research conducted by Anteneh Tesfaye Tola. It was first exhibited at TU Delft before being featured at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2023.
Meqdela Gebbi er en fysisk modell av det kongelige kompaniet til keiser Tewodros II ved Meqdela, fjellborgen i nordre Etiopia som tjente som hans siste sterkhet og stedet for Maqdala-slaget i 1868. Modellen ble bestilt som del av et forskningsinitiativ om etiopisk høylandsarkitektur og bidro til Venezia-arkitekturbiennalen 2023.
I tett samarbeid med Alex Kirschstein og veiledet av Prof. Dirk van Gameren ble modellen konstruert av hvit gips og balsatre i en skala som gjør den intrikate romlige hierarkiet til komplekset lesbar — progresjonen fra ytre innhegning til indre gård til de intime kongelige kvartene på toppen.
Historisk dokumentasjon for Meqdela er fragmentarisk, noe som gjør modelleringsprosessen til en handling av arkitektonisk tolkning like mye som representasjon. Modellen foreslår en romlig lesning av stedet basert på overlevende fotografier, muntlige historier og analyse av sammenlignbare etiopiske høylandsbyggetradisjoner.
Meqdela Gebbi é um modelo físico do complexo real do Imperador Tewodros II em Meqdela, a fortaleza montanhosa no norte da Etiópia que serviu como seu último reduto e o local da Batalha de Maqdala em 1868. O modelo foi encomendado como parte de uma iniciativa de pesquisa sobre arquitetura das terras altas etíopes e contribuiu para a Bienal de Arquitetura de Veneza 2023.
Trabalhando em estreita colaboração com Alex Kirschstein e guiado pelo Prof. Dirk van Gameren, o modelo foi construído em gesso branco e balsawood em uma escala que permite que a intrincada hierarquia espacial do complexo seja legível — a progressão do recinto externo para o pátio interno até os aposentos reais íntimos no cume.
A documentação histórica de Meqdela é fragmentária, tornando o processo de construção do modelo um ato de interpretação arquitetônica tanto quanto de representação. O modelo propõe uma leitura espacial do local com base em fotografias sobreviventes, histórias orais e análise de tradições comparáveis de construção nas terras altas etíopes.
