In my latest project, I designed a wooden chicken coop for my parents, inspired by my father's fascination with chickens and our family's desire to be self-sustained with fresh eggs. This project stems from a deeper aspiration to reconnect with where our food comes from, fostering a closer relationship between daily life and the natural processes that support it.
The coop's design is based on two lines perpendicular to each other, creating a simple yet functional layout:
As an extension of the garage we built a few years ago, the coop integrates with the existing architecture. Thoughtful consideration was given to the garden's design, particularly the trees and plants that define the space. The outdoor area of the coop surrounds our family's pear tree, creating a blend between the new structure and the garden.
To accentuate the architectural lines of the coop, I selected specific plants that enhance its geometry and connection to the garden. This careful selection not only highlights the design but also contributes to the overall aesthetic and ecological value of the space.
Noen ganger er den mest instruktive bygningen en liten en. Hønsehuset — designet og bygget for hånd i hagen til et hus i utkanten av Oslo — ble en øvelse i materiell ærlighet, strukturell økonomi og gleden av å lage noe komplett.
Strukturen bruker grovt saget norsk gran, overlatt til å brune naturlig, med tradisjonelle tap-og-splitt-forbindelser der hønenes velvære og noen treskruer tillot det. Taket skråner i to retninger for å avlede snø, og en sørorientert utegård gir fuglene lys i de få timene med Oslo-vinterlys.
Utover sin åpenbare funksjon var prosjektet en påminnelse om at arkitekturens prinsipper gjelder i alle skalaer: proporsjon, orientering, materiale, lys og forholdet mellom inne og ute er like levende i et 4m² hønsehus som i en offentlig bygning.
Às vezes, a construção mais instrutiva é uma pequena. O galinheiro — projetado e construído à mão no jardim de uma casa nos arredores de Oslo — tornou-se um exercício em honestidade material, economia estrutural e o prazer de fazer algo completo.
A estrutura usa pinho norueguês serrado à mão, deixado para envelhecer naturalmente, com encaixes tradicionais de mortise e tenon onde o bem-estar das galinhas e alguns parafusos de madeira permitiam. O telhado inclina-se em duas direções para escoar a neve, e um galinheiro voltado para o sul dá às aves luz nas poucas horas de sol de inverno em Oslo.
Além de sua função óbvia, o projeto foi um lembrete de que os princípios da arquitetura se aplicam em todas as escalas: proporção, orientação, material, luz e a relação entre dentro e fora são tão vivos em um galinheiro de 4m² quanto em um edifício público.
