The core of this project consisted of an integral design of a sustainable building at the Schiehaven in Rotterdam in which both a sports college and an indoor sports facility are housed. The sports complex will be a meeting pace for 1500 users (students, teachers, (top) athletes, and spectators) who all have a connection with the building. Parts of the building had to be accessible to the public. The building, when completed, would serve as a school, but also give something back to its surroundings and neighbors.
Billow by the Maas is designed with nature as inspiration. The building is not supposed to look like nature but rather use natural shapes and elements to emphasize the peace and calm that can be found in nature. The building consists of two “mountains” divided by a valley that you can walk over. This way, the roof does not stand as a barrier for the new users of the other building on the site, the Maaskant, but rather as a connection between the users of the school, the sports fields, and the users of the Maaskant. The space is further designed to consider both the permanent users (students and teachers) of the sports school and the visitors of the building and the surrounding. The space is, as nature is, a space for the public.
Billow by the Maas er et strandsoneutviklingsforslag for et sted langs Maas-elven i Rotterdam. Prosjektet responderer på havnebyens industrielle arv og foreslår en ny urban typologi som flyter med elven — bølgende, lagdelt og i konstant dialog med vann.
Utviklet som del av ON6-designstudioet ved TU Delft, utfordret arbeidet å designe i skalaen av kvartal. Billow foreslår et blandet program vevd inn i en strukturell form som speiler elvens rytmiske bevegelse: bølgede fasader, kaskaderende terrasser og en offentlig strandpromenade som knytter prosjektet til den omkringliggende byen.
Forslaget undersøker hvordan moderne strandsonebygging kan anerkjenne Rotterdams historie som havneby — ikke ved å imitere fortiden, men ved å kanalisere vannets energi og logikk inn i arkitektonisk form.
Billow by the Maas é uma proposta de design para um terreno ao longo do rio Maas em Rotterdam. O projeto responde ao patrimônio industrial da cidade portuária ao mesmo tempo que propõe uma nova tipologia urbana que flui com o rio — ondulante, em camadas e em constante diálogo com a água.
Desenvolvido como parte do estúdio de design ON6 da TU Delft, o trabalho desafiou o projeto na escala do quarteirão urbano. Billow propõe um programa de uso misto entrelaçado em uma forma estrutural que espelha o movimento rítmico do rio: fachadas onduladas, terraços em cascata e um calçadão público à beira d'água que conecta o projeto à cidade ao redor.
A proposta investiga como o desenvolvimento contemporâneo de orla pode reconhecer a história de Rotterdam como cidade portuária — não imitando o passado, mas canalizando a energia e a lógica da água em forma arquitetônica.
